I have briefly touched on Dropbox a few times, but I wanted to take time to explain what makes Dropbox great. I know a lot of people that don’t ‘get’ Dropbox are usually people with only one computer, they see Dropbox as a way to synchronize files across multiple computers and nothing more.

Dropbox though is much more than just a synchronization tool and, if you use a computer at all, you should be using Dropbox. Here are the benefits of Dropbox for people with just one computer:

2gb of free data backup

Version control

Web access

iPhone access (soon iPad)

Multi-platform

Now you may look at those and think that 2gb is too low and none of the other benefits are that great, but you would be wrong. The second point, Version Control, is the most important feature of Dropbox.

Version Control Rocks

Version control is a fancy way of saying incremental backups. Let’s take a word document as our example. Say you are writing a long report in Word, and you have it saved to your Dropbox folder (you can only sync one folder with Dropbox, but you can have multiple folders inside that folder). When you are working on the file your cat steps on the keyboard managing to delete your text and save the file (this is very unlikely but an easy example). In a normal scenario you would be screwed – out all the time and work that you spent making that document. Without Dropbox this would be true, but you have Dropbox so all you have to do is log on to the website, and revert to a previous version of the document. You are now back to the save point before the save that your cat kindly made. This is what version control gives you.

This is the true power of Dropbox.

How I Use Dropbox

I keep all my files that I am currently working on, and those that I have spent a lot of time working on, in the Dropbox folder. This keeps a constant backup of all the files on my computer that are changing regularly between backups. I also gain version control, syncing and access on my iPhone.

Go Get It

If you want to get Dropbox for yourself, I highly recommend doing so (it’s free) and if you wouldn’t mind using my referral link, then we will both get a nice bit of extra space.

UPDATE: (February 28, 2010) Thank you to everyone who has signed up using the referral link, we each received an extra 250mb by doing that. Hope you love it as much as I do!
