OmniFocus: Recurring Projects Make Great Grocery Lists

One of the features that I love about OmniFocus is not only can you create a recurring action, but you can create a recurring project. At my company there are a series of reports that I have to do each month, they each involve a lot of actions, that for the most part I know, but occasionally I miss a step. To solve this problem I created a recurring project, with all the actions to complete the project neatly outlined, it pops up in OmniFocus when I need to do them, and then goes away until next month.

Taking that idea into my personal life I have done the same thing for my grocery list. I shop every week on the same day, and as with most people there are items that are on the list each week. Using a recurring project as my list, I can ensure that I don’t forget stuff, and I no longer have to write down the same items each week.

Step 1: Create the Project

The first step is to create the project, place it where you want, and name it. You need to infill the actions you want, so for a grocery list, you need to put in the items you need to get.

Step 2: Due Dates

After you have it all set up, just the way you want it to repeat, click on the project heading itself and pull up the inspector. Here you will want to assign a due date (the date you are going shopping) and a start date (when you want it to show up as available actions).

Step 3: Repeat it

Now drop down to the repeat field and tell it how often to repeat, I have shop once a week, every week, and so I repeat once every week.

Done

Now you are done and you have a recurring list. Once you complete the project it disappears, and you don’t have to worry about forgetting things at the store again.
